Poui Blossoms: Weekly Photo Challenge – Evanescent

“This challenge is wide open. Evanescent can be any fleeting moment in time.

  1. Soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing.”

If I could choose a personal totem, it would be the yellow poui tree. Have I said this before? When it isn’t in bloom, it isn’t a particularly noticeable tree. But in poui season, for a few days, the tree erupts into a mass of bright yellow blossoms!poui tree 2Blossoms…like sunlight captured by the tree!P1120028Then they fall…and are gone….Poui blossoms on ground

Quickly fading or disappearing. But magnificent for the short time they are here!

  4. I haven’t been to Jamaica – though I have visited several Caribbean islands. Are poui trees common in the Caribbean – or only in Jamaica? What is the best time to visit to see them?

We have a similar brief period of blossoming trees – mostly Japanese cherries and plums – in Vancouver BC. It happens in spring but that season is proving to be much less predictable than in the past.

    • Pouis are common in some other Caribbean islands, as well as Jamaica. February, March and April are the most reliable months for seeing the trees in bloom. But as you mention with blossoming trees in Vancouver, the period is becoming less predictable. When I first planted pouis in our garden about 30 years ago, they bloomed once for the year. Now, they bloom at other times as well…. I’m planning to do a blog post about it.
      Thanks for your interest!
