Poui At UWI…And A Monument

A few weeks ago, I drove onto the UWI Mona campus via the Post Office gate. (UWI Mona = University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica). The poui trees were in bloom and it was a magnificent sight!UWI poui Post Office gate

Potoo In A Pink Poui: Weekly Photo Challenge – Unlikely

“Maybe you can’t predict it, but you can still take a photo of it.”

I slowed down when we approached the pink poui in bloom. She is a beauty. As we drove past, Elizabeth asked what the big bird in the tree was.P1290835 “What bird?” I asked. “Or is it a piece of stick?” she said.P1290812 I reversed the car so we could get a better look. It was a Northern potoo, on its daytime perch. (And just to note that it’s not a patoo or owl, but a potoo.) I will always remember that day as the day we saw the potoo in the pink poui.P1290819 (2)

Pink Poui Tree: Weekly Photo Challenge – Prolific

“This week, show us your interpretation of prolific.”

It is still poui season and a poui tree in bloom is certainly prolific! Last week I shared photos of a yellow poui tree. This week it is the turn of a pink poui tree. (I declare my bias in favour of yellow poui trees, but I would never say this out loud in the hearing of any poui tree!)

Poui Blossoms: Weekly Photo Challenge – Evanescent

“This challenge is wide open. Evanescent can be any fleeting moment in time.

ev·a·nes·cent [evəˈnes(ə)nt]
adjective

  1. Soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing.”

If I could choose a personal totem, it would be the yellow poui tree. Have I said this before? When it isn’t in bloom, it isn’t a particularly noticeable tree. But in poui season, for a few days, the tree erupts into a mass of bright yellow blossoms!poui tree 2Blossoms…like sunlight captured by the tree!P1120028Then they fall…and are gone….Poui blossoms on ground

Quickly fading or disappearing. But magnificent for the short time they are here!
